An art star before she was 30, Dana Schutz is well known for her 2005 work The Presentation, a large-scale, James Ensor-like painting of spectators at a surgery that is in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)’s permanent collection. Her exuberant canvases depict grotesque, comic figures in acts of creativity or violence and frequently begin from imaginative premises, as in her “Self Eaters” (2004) or “Tourette’s” series (2010). With vibrant use of subject, form, and color, Schutz’s works variously recall artists like Philip Guston, Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet, and Kees van Dongen.
