Amy Wilson

Series:

Individual Work:

Amy Wilson's army of adventurous, adolescent, fair-haired girls seems ingenuous in appearance, but on closer inspection their activities and profuse comments are imbued with a complex, anxious analysis of contemporary society. Wilson's alluring and delicate imagery draws the viewer very close to the surface, at which point her copious texts comes into focus, enhancing the viewer?s visual experience with an intricate socio-political discourse that draws no easy conclusion. Her imagery recalls daily newspaper cartoons, as well as the epic scrolls of self-taught artist, Henry Darger. In Fair Trade, Wilson unraveled her ongoing relationship to anarchist text she had studied in graduate school and recently rediscovered.  Amy Wilson was born in 1973 in New York City and currently lives in Jersey City, NJ. Wilson completed her MFA in Sculpture at Yale Univeristy in 1997. Among numerous venues, Wilson has shown at PS1, The Drawing Center, and the Jersey City Museum. Her work was recently showcased at the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh with a solo show titled Artists Project: Brillo Box Outpost (2006). She shows with BravinLee programs. In addition to her studio work, Wilson teaches at the School of Visual Arts.
