Michelle Stuart was born in 1938 and lives and works in New York, NY. Working outside the boundaries of traditional artistic mediums, Stuart has completed numerous murals and public projects, including non-permanent environmental installations such as a 1,000 ft installation in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon called Stone Alignment/Solstice Cairns, 1979. Her artwork consistently centers on themes in nature and Stuart often incorporates natural elements into her compositions such as beeswax, earth, fossils and plants. Stuart's prints are an integral element to her life-long investigations into the order of the natural world, its beauty and mystery. The longevity and diversity of New York-based artist Michelle Stuart's career is a testament to her renewable and lasting creativity and enthusiasm. Stuart has had one-person exhibitions at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; MIT, Boston; The Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA and the Williams College Museum of Art,Williamstown, MA to name a few. Numerous prestigious institutions have collected her work, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Brooklyn Museum; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. In addition, Start has been honored with four National Endowment grants, two New York Foundation for the Arts grants, a Ford Foundation grant, a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and an American Academy in Rome residency.
