Shahzia Sikander

Individual Work:

Shahzia Sikander was born in 1969 in Lahore, Pakistan. Trained as a miniaturist at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Sikander has since recast her skills into vibrant and intricate imagery that literally and figuratively layers themes such as multicultural identities, the compression of the past and present and the juxtaposition of traditional and avant-garde traditions. Shahzia Sikander received a B.F.A. (1992) from the National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan, and an M.F.A. (1995) from the Rhode Island School of Design. She was an artist-in-residence at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles (2005).  In 2006 she was designated a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum Affiliate. Her work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions at such national and international venues as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the National Gallery of Canada, the Venice Biennale 2005, and the Musée dArt moderne de la Ville de Paris. In 2006 Sikander was awarded the prestigious John D. and Katherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.
